Different Designs for Advert – Audience Feedback

As we have designed 3 different options for our advert to promote our artist LUNA. We felt this was a prime opportunity to complete an extensive piece of audience feedback to find out what the general consensus was about our advert. Evidently, the pie chart displays our findings from this survey and Design 1 gained 2 votes, Design 2 gained 3 votes and Design 3 gained 15 votes. As our survey was completed by 20 individuals, our research shows that with a 75% gain – Design 3 ultimately seemed more popular with the public. As we also agreed with this answer, we have decided to create design 3 as our final advert.

Along with our survey we asked the people taking part: why have you chosen this design? and, what didn’t you like about the other designs?

The main comments made about these questions were:
– Design 1 and 2 were too similar to the digipak – almost identical. Therefore, if you choose Design 3 it is more original and reflects LUNA’s identity better.
– Design 3 demonstrates a balanced design
– The framing od Design 3 is original and cool

3 Designs for our Advert

Below are the three different draft designs for our advert. They display the basic and rough outline/placing/framing of our potential advert.

Design 1: Luna’s face is placed in the middle of the advert
Design 2: Luna’s face is placed lower down the advert
Design 3: Luna’s face is cropped in half and placed symmetrically either side of the advert

We will be conducting a survey to find out what the general consensus of the advert is.

Feedback for initial advert idea

We asked our classmates for their personal feedback for our initial ideas for our advert poster for Luna.

Digipak Evaluation

Below is a video of MBD explaining our decisions made for our digipak draft. We considered our artists representation, audience and links to genre.

Below is a video of fellow classmates evaluating our Digipak draft. We received a lot of constructive critiscm from them and we are going to improve our Digipak by using their feedback.

Rough Cut – Feedback

After submitting our rough cut of our music video, we have gained some vital feedback from our media studies teachers. We have found this extremely helpful as we will try to improve our music video in all of the aspects listed in our feedback.

The main areas that need improving according to our teachers consists of:
1) Make the narrative stronger.
2) Edit the shots out where our singer looks down or out of the shot.
3) Night shots lack energy.

The positive and successful areas include:
1) Use of photos are good.
2) Some varied shots of Zara.
3) Light shots have more energy.
4) Some of the effects including jump cuts.
5) Lip synching is good.

Below is a document explaining the ways in which we hope to improve our music video for our final cut.

Dailies Feedback

After completing our second ‘dailies’ feedback session, we gained some very useful feedback from our media studies teacher and classmates. The feedback was based on footage we showed the class of our actress, Zara, in the studio setting singing the song – this is the performance element of our music video.

Positives:
– bright costumes worked well
– close ups of her eyes looked good
– eyes looked sharp
– our actress successfully conveyed the appropriate expression when singing the song
– well formed shots
– good variety of studio shots
– successful and effective lighting
– good hair and make-up

Negatives:
– close up of her mouth singing didn’t work and wasn’t very effective
– less playing of hair when singing the song
– she moves a lot up and down and does not stay in the middle third of the shot

Filming – Studio Shots

After filming our trial shots with Brooke in the location setting, we realised there was a lot to improve in terms of lighting, expression, energy and costume. Therefore, we made sure we successfully improved on each of these areas when we filmed Zara in the same location.

A major issue we encountered when filming our trial shots was the lighting. Thus, we hired another lighting kit to ensure we had enough lights and soft boxes in order to significantly brighten the studio setting and make the backdrop more white in the shots. We also altered the positions of the lights to enhance the light on the background so it wouldn’t look dull in the footage.

During this filming session, we also filmed Zara in numerous outfits. This is due to the feedback we got from our first dailies, as Brooke only wore a plain black top and no jewellery, this made the shot look slightly dull. Therefore, Zara wore 4 different outfits, including statement jewellery. This has worked out well in the shots and looks far more like a pop-genre music video.

Sleigh Bells – Comeback Kid

Through audience feedback our media teacher, Mr Dunford, suggested we take inspiration from this music video – Comeback Kid by Sleigh Bells. As we have thoroughly described the vibe and energy we want to convey through our music video to our media teacher, he believed that Sleigh Bells is a similar artist to the one we wish to convey in our music video. We agreed that this is a similar artist in terms of costume and energy.

Sleigh Bells

Our media teacher suggested we watch the Sleigh Bells – Comeback Kid, music video. As he believed this was a similar image we were hoping to achieve, along with similar editing. After watching it we felt that the editing was extremely good and something we would hope to do with our own music video. Also, we have taken inspiration from the studio shots and the shots when there is a lot of movement by the artist. When we filmed our trial shots we did not get our actress, Brooke, to dance/naturally move with the lyrics. Therefore, this resulted in a lack of energy in the shots. So when we filmed our studio shots with Zara, we asked her to move and use her arms and hands, what a lot of artists do in their music videos.

Dailies Feedback

In our media lesson today we had our first ‘dailies’ session. This consists of receiving feedback from our media teacher and our fellow classmates. They give us feedback in regards to casting/feedback/locations etc. We found this very helpful as we have realised some important aspects in which we need to alter and change to ensure we improve our media studies coursework.

The main elements we wanted feedback on was the location of the studio and the lighting we used and also using Brooke as our actress, we showed them trial shots of Brooke lip-syncing to the song ‘Grammy’. As Brooke is only 15 we felt this was an extremely young age to try and act older as she would have been in a relationship and also as the actor we have hired is 24, we believed this was too big of an age gap to make their relationship believable. Thus, we wanted to ask everyones opinion of Brooke playing Luna. The general feedback was positive as everyone believed she looked a lot older than 15 years old as she was wearing a lot of make up and had her hair styled. However, although her appearance was successful – her lip syncing wasn’t so positive as everyone believed that she wasn’t really singing the song and simply just miming. So we have realised we need to work more on this, and through research we have found that singing at the same time of the song makes it seem a lot more believable as her mouth will be moving the exact same time as the music.

Another point made about the trial shots of the casino. The general feedback was positive when it came to the extreme close ups of the cards and chips. However, everyone believed that it wasn’t filmed at a party as the background looked unrealistic for a casino. Therefore we have changed the location to a house party with Luna’s boyfriend and his friends, they are generally standing around drinking and having a good time. Also, they will be playing poker and cards.
